BIOPHYSICS

Course ID: MWW-SE>BIOPHYSICS
Course title: BIOPHYSICS
Semester: 1 / Winter
ECTS: 3
Lectures/Classes: 15 / 15 hours
Field of study: Veterinary Medicine
Study cycle: 1st cycle
Type of course: compulsory
Prerequisites: There is a limit of 16 people registered for a particular course Physics and biology as taught in high school
Contact person: dr hab. Janusz Miśkiewicz
Short description: During the course the student is to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge on selected areas of physics and biophysics; in particular, laws and principles that are indispensable for understanding life processes occurring in the organism. He also gets to know physical methods used in studies of the properties of cells and organs. The course also deals with the effects of physical factors, such as e.g. temperature, ultra- and infra-sounds, accelerations and ionizing radiation on the organism; discussed are also physical methods applied in diagnostics and therapy.
Full description: The course is to acquaint the students with selected areas of physics that are necessary for understanding physical processes occurring in living organisms. It enables the student to conduct laboratory tasks based on the quantitative methods of physics. It contains: classical mechanics, real forces in Newton’s dynamics, work and energy, conservation principles. Practical use of similarity analysis. Noninertial systems and forces of inertia (overload and weightlessness), forces in circular motion, vibrations, wave motion, application of ultrasounds in diagnostics (USG) and therapy. Kinds of heat transport in the organism and laws that govern them, and mechanisms of temperature control in animals. Conditions of stability and mobility of animals. Nuclear physics and the effect of ionizing radiation on the organisms. Biophysics of the biological membrane.
Bibliography:
Learning outcomes: Knowledge: - acquires theoretical and practical knowledge of the principles and laws of physics, which are indispensable for explaining the living processes that occur in cells and organs - comes to know the physical methods for studying biological systems as used in medicine - acquires theoretical and practical knowledge of the effects of physical factors on living organisms - comes to know the physical principles of the methods used in diagnostics and therapy Skills: - is able to conduct measurements of the physical quantities that describe the properties of a biological system or those that characterize a given process; - on the basis of the values of physical quantities which are vital for the operation of an organism, the graduate is able to estimate the health of the organism; - is able to determine the effect of physical parameters on some of the processes that occur in the organism. Social competences: - the student is aware of the necessity of using physical methods in diagnostics of organisms and therapeutic procedures and in protecting health against harmful action of physical agents in the natural environment
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: Exam - 30% rating from classes and + 70% rating from lectures.
